puku
1. (modifier) secretly, silently, without speaking - when used after the verb to indicate that something is done on the quiet, e.g. haere puku (go secretly), nohopuku/noho puku (remain silent).
Ko te whakahē o te tangata ki a mātou me haere puku atu ki a koe, kī atu ai e hē ana tā mātou tikanga (JPS 1959:273). / The only disagreement has been expressed by people going secretly to you and saying that our rights are not valid.

2. (modifier) without taking food, fasting - used to indicate abstinence.

puku
1. (modifier) very - intensifier when used before or after the word it qualifies, e.g. puku horo kai (ravenous), pukukai (greedy, gluttonous), pukuriri (furious).
Heoi, ka noho nei te taniwha, ko tana mahi, he patu i ngā tira haere; arā, he kai i ngā tāngata, horopuku tonu, ahakoa he kawenga tā te tangata, ka horomia pukutia e taua taniwha (JPS 1905:200). / And so the taniwha remained there. His occupation was killing the travelling parties - that is, he used to swallow them whole, even if they had loads on their backs they were swallowed up by that taniwha.
2. (verb) to be clenched (of the fist).

3. (noun) swelling, tumour, lump, bubble, stomach, abdomen, centre, belly, tummy.
Kotahi wiki i muri mai ka mau tētahi arikeita, nō te tuakanga i te puku ka kitea ngā kahu o taua Pākehā i roto (TP 4/1904:8). / One week later an alligator was captured, and on opening up its stomach, the clothes of that Pākehā were found inside.

huaketo puku
1. (noun) rotavirus.
Ko te huaketo puku te pūtake o te ruaki me te kōrere. Ko te mutunga pea o tēnei ko te matewai kino, ā, i ētahi wā ko te matenga. Ko ngā piripoho ngā mea e tino mōrearea ana (HE 2017). / Rotavirus causes vomiting and diarrhoea. This can lead to severe dehydration and sometimes death. Young babies are most at risk (HE 2017).

1. lying, full of nonsense - an idiom when used as a modifier after a noun.
Pare: Ko tēnei tōku rā whakamutunga mō te kai paipa me te whakamutu mō ake tonu atu. Rangi: He tangata te puku koe. Koinā tō kōrero i tērā wiki (HKK 1991:63). / Pare: This is my last day of smoking and I'm stopping for good. Rangi: You're all bullshit. That's what you said last week.

puku te rae
1. angry, annoyed, livid with rage - an idiom to express anger.
Kia tūpato, kei puku te rae o tō pāpara. / Be careful or your uncle will get angry.
Kua puku te rae o tērā rā i te mea ko ia anake te mea kāore i pōhiritia kia haere ki te hui. / That one is really angry because she was the only one not invited to go to the meeting.
